    Description

    Reproduced and Enlarged
    Photo
    of
    Leutnant Wilhelm Frankl
    20 Victories and the Pour-le-Merite
    Perfect for Framing
Image of Frankl 4 taken from Sanke Postcard # 421 (from my collection).  Frankl was an early ace of the Imperial German Air Service.  He was one of the first pilots to receive the coveted Pour-le-Merite (12 July 1916) and the only Jewish ace to be awarded this medal.  Flying with KeK Vaux he scored 8 victories and then transferred to Jasta 4 in early September 1916.  He was appointed commander of Jasta 4 on 1 January 1917 but was killed in action on 8 April while in combat with Bristol Fighters. His plane was seen to break-up in mid-air.
Frankl is shown here in a casual outdoor pose in front of an Albatros Fighter.
I have removed all the writing, "cleaned up" and enlarged the photo which now over 4 times the size of the original postcard while still retaining a crisp and clear image. Matted and put into a standard picture frame it would be a handsome addition to any WWI collection.
