Reproduced and Enlarged Photo ofLeutnant Kurt Wolf
33 Victories and the Pour-le-Merite
Reproduced photo of Ltn Kurt Wolff of Jastas 11 & 29 taken from Sanke Card #513 (from my collection). Kurt Wolff was an exceptional pilot and ace of the Imperial German Air Service attaining 33 victories and the coveted Pour-le-Merite (Blue Max) before being KIA. Wolff is shown proudly wearing his captured British leather flying jacket which were prized by the German pilots of the day.
He began flying fighters with Jasta 11 in October 1916. It was not until the arrival of von Richthofen in January 1917 that he started scoring steadily. Under von Richthofen, Wolff became a star performer of Jasta 11. Showing great skill as a pilot and potential as a leader, he was sent on to command Jasta 29 in May of 1917. With the formation of JG1 Wolff returned to his old squadron and commanded it until his death on 15 Sept. 1917. He was a very close friend of von Richthofen (maybe his closest) and was killed in the Baron's triplane FI/102 while the Baron was on leave.
I have removed all the writing, "cleaned up" and enlarged the photo which now measure 5" X 7 3/4" while still retaining a crisp and clear image. Matted and put into a standard 9 X 13 picture frame it would be a handsome addition to any WWI collection.
