RARE WWI TRENCH ART NAVAL GUN TURRET 1922 INKWELL GERMAN BATTLESHIP HELGOLAND. Up for the auction is a very fine
World War 1 Naval trench art gun turret German High Seas Fleet Battleship Helgoland. Brass naval gun turret cast from the metal of German Battleship Helgoland. Solid and heavy. The turret revolves on the base through 360 degrees and has a hinged lid which opens to reveal two square recesses for inkwells each is just over 1.5" square and a little over 1" deep. Cast in the underside of the lid is: CAST FROM METAL EX-SURRENDERED GERMAN BATTLESHIP "HELGOLAND" Thos. W Ward Ltd SHEFFIELD 1922. Helgoland was the lead ship in dreadnought battleship class. Ship saw action at the Battle of Jutland and was in the centre of the German line. Ceded to Britain at the end of the war it was scrapped in 1921.
