Description

Liquidating my mother's household. This listing is for a large, antique, Spanish oil painting of Joseph being visited by the angel, who came to tell him that Mary was pregnant with Baby Jesus. Two cherubs are seen nearby, watching from the heavens. The painting is unsigned.
My military family lived in Germany in the 1960's and we traveled to Spain every summer, as well as France, Holland, Belgium, and Italy. Over the years my parents bought many old European oil paintings in antique shops, art shops, and at local flea markets. This is one of those paintings. It hung in our living room for for decades, as it was one of Mom's favorites. When she moved into assisted living a few years ago, I cleared out her house and have been disposing of her beautiful collection.
Mom had all her paintings appraised in San Diego back in 1974, after our family returned to the States. I have the written appraisal of this piece done at that time. (see photo) "The painting is in good condition except that it needs cleaning." "Painting is from the Italian school of painting, circa 1690."
I also had it appraised a couple years ago by Bill Farmer, an art appraiser in Santa Fe. He told me: This is a "1640 Spanish provincial painting – dark and naive." He said the "appraised value is - ,000" and that it would probably bring "a ,000 to ,000 cash offer."
The painting measures: 36 1/2" by 29 1/2". The frame is 4" wide, so the total framed dimensions are 44.5" by 37.5".
