    Sanke Postcards of
    Ltn Erwin Bohme (Sanke 502)
Bohme was an Engineer before the war started.  He immediately joined a Jaeger Regiment and then volunteered for flying duties despite his somewhat advanced age of 35.   Assigned to Kagohl 2 on the Eastern Front commanded by Hauptmann Wilhelm Boelcke Bohme met his younger brother Oswald who subsequently picked him to be a member of the fledgling Jasta 2.   By 28 October 1916 Bohme already had 5 victories but on that date he was involved in a mid-air collision with Boelcke while engaging DH-2s of 24 Squadron.  Boelcke crashed to his death but Bohme survived.  Bohme would continue scoring consistently while also being wounded several times.  He was given command of Jasta 29, scoring 1 victory with this unit before being returned to Jasta 2 as its commander. He received notification of award of the coveted Pour-le-Merite on 24 November 1917 but was killed in action 5 days latter while attacking an AWFK 8 2-seater.
ObLtn Eduard Ritter von Dostler (Sanke 548)
Dostler Scored 26 victories in WWI and was a member of von Richthofen's Flying Circus.  Dostler started flying fighters with Jasta 13 taking command of the unit in December 1916.  He was transferred to command of Jasta 34 in February 1917 and then took command of Jasta 6 on 9 June 1917.  On 22 June Jasta 6 was incorporated into the fist German Combat Fighter Wing Jagdgeschwader 1 (Richtofen's Flying Circus).  He received the coveted Pour-le-Merite on 6 August.  He was killed in action while attacking a British RE 8 on 21 August 1917.  He was posthumously awarded the Military Order of Max Joseph making him a Knight and bestowing the title of "Ritter"
    ObLtn Rudolf Bertold  (Sanke 421)
    Bertold was the 7
    th
highest scoring ace of the Imperial German Air Service with 44 confirmed victories and recipient of the coveted Pour-le-Merite.  Bertold began his flying 2-seaters with FFA23. He started flying Fokker and Pfalz Eindeckers with KeK Vaux where he scored his first 6 victories.  A founding member of Jasta 4 he stayed with this unit only briefly, going to Jasta 14 on 14 October 1916.  Severely wounded in May 1917, he did not return to the front until August going on to command Jasta 18 where he was wounded again in October.  In March 1918 he was selected to command Jagdgeschwader Nr. II a post he held until being wounded again on 10 August 1918 when he collided with a DH4 which would become his 44
    th
and last victory of the war.   Wounded numerous times through-out his flying career he was know as the “Iron Knight”.  One of the very few fighter pilots to start flying fighters in early 1916 and survive the war.  Ironically he was killed by rioters in the post WWI Germany, reportedly strangled with the ribbon of his Pour-le-Merite.
