    Description

    1886 Liberty Nickel, Choice Proof, certified PCGS/CAC PR-64 in a first generation "rattler" holder.
    A sharp original Choice Proof example of this Key Date. Well struck on a good planchet, oddly enough NOT always a given for this date even as a Proof. For some reason the Mint fell down on “quality control” this year, possible due to the torrent of Morgan Dollars they were forced to strike in 1886. Soft grey-green surfaces; the slight “yellowish” streakyness visible in the Obverse image is not really obvious when the coin is viewed in person, just there as a very light undertone. No spots or problems, the grade limited only by the small nick seen on Liberty’s cheek. The quality confirmed by the CAC sticker. An astoundingly low CAC population, only 17 in the grade versus 380 PCGS and 235 NGC coins (when listed), one reason that this date carries a CAC premium unlike a number of other Semi Key and Key dates in U. S. Nickels.
