    Robert Brown, born in Ohio of Irish descent, and his brother, John H. Brown, founded the firm. Robert was a Civil War veteran who received honorable discharge, having been a private in an Ohio regiment. In the late 1800's, Brown moved to Detroit and started a fire insurance, real estate and lumber business with his brother John (who had previously moved to Detroit) on Griswold Street in Detroit
    The Calvert Lithographing Company was founded in 1863 in Detroit, Michigan by Thomas Calvert. In 1950, the firm was sold to a group of Chicago investors. In 1970, the firm was absorbed by the Canadian printing company, Lawson & Jones.
